How long have you been in business?
I started my first candle business, Ugly Duckling Designs, in 2003. I added the Candle Confectionery in 2008, as an experiment on Etsy between "primitive" or cute colorful backgrounds on product pictures. Obviously, the cute won out and the Candle Confectionery stayed.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Tell us a little about the products you sell.
I sell bakery type candles, melts, etc. Anything that smells and looks like you can eat it...goes on the scent list and gets created.
What is you favorite donut flavor and how many can you eat in one sitting?
Coconut (but not toasted) I could probably eat two in one sitting...but I was just diagnosed with diabetes in December so now donuts and sweets are off limits unless I can make it with a low carb, no sugar recipe.
How did you come up with the name for your business?
I called my brother and we racked our brains on a name that would be cute by bakery shop like. My brother is super creative and helps me out a when I'm in need of themes or names for items.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Eggs, Silk milk, lots of veggies, and iced tea (it's a must).
Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
I would love to open a brick and mortar store eventually.
If you could be a super hero, what would you want your super powers to be?
I'd love to be able to fly. To see the world from that vantage point, at any time, would be awesome.
How do you stay current in today's handmade market?
I'm always looking for new ways to be creative with wax. I add new scents, I add new lines of products. I'm currently working on our "Tipsy" line of drink candles. Stay tuned.
Do you sing in the shower or in the car?
I sing ALL the time! My family gets so sick of hearing me. In the car, in the workshop, at my desk. I can't work without music...it's in my soul.
What are your bestselling items?
My big 30oz bakery jar candles are super popular...also the cupcake candles.
Where would you go in a time machine?
I would definitely go back in time. I'd love to meet Mary (Jesus's mother) and the disciples...Noah too and possibly Jonah (love to hear that story first hand).
What advice would you give others who are looking to start a business?
Do as much research as possible before deciding to take the jump. Being in business for yourself is hard work and the competition is outrageous. Be prepared to put in long hours and go with the ups and downs. Then jump in with both feet and promote and market like crazy.
If someone made a movie about your life, what would the title be?Music & Mayhem.
What is your favorite sweet treat to indulge in when life gets you down?
Since being diagnosed with diabetes...my favorite sweet treat is Carb Smart Chocolate Ice Cream...love this stuff.
Tell us something most people don't know about you.
I've played the piano since I was 7 years old. I went to college for music performance. I should be touring with the symphony right now...somewhere in Paris, lol. But God had other plans for me. I am the church pianist on Sundays and I love that!
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you take besides food and water?
My piano, ipod and cat.
What's the last book you read?
I'm currently reading the Outlander series. I'm on book six.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My parents! They have always supported me in everything, my whole life. They are always there to pick me up when I'm going through tough times. Their love is unconditional and never ending. My dad drove me two hours (round trip) and then sat through an hour piano lesson every Monday for 11 years. He is my biggest fan and inspiration...he plays piano too. My mom inspires me to be the best person I can be. God's love shines through her like no one else I know. If I can grow up to be only half the person she is, then I am blessed.
